January Book Review

A Court of Thorns and Roses authored by Sarah J. Maas

The books of bestselling author Sarah J. Maas have been on the rise with several of her book series becoming popular with the trend #BookTok on Tik Tok. Her three series A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), Throne of Glass (TOG), and Crescent City (CC) have become global phenomenons, with ACOTAR and CC projected to have new releases in the coming years. The specialty of genre Maas is popular for is the Romance/Fantasy, or Romantasy, genre of popular series. She is able to extensively detail her world building of each single series while also interconnecting them in addition to having elements of romance that are always fun and exciting to read.

The series that got me back into reading and into the worlds created by Maas was A Court of Thorns and Roses. Despite its initial release in 2015, it has garnered much popularity in recent years. Reading the first book opened up my eyes to the world of fantasy which I had never ventured into before. ACOTAR tells the story of a huntress, Feyre, who unknowingly ends the life of a creature she did not know was from the magical world of faeries. In response to this event happening, she is forced to return to this magical faerie world and live amongst the people who had once ruled over her world. As Feyre begins to adapt to her new life, new discoveries and secrets unfold as romance, adventure, and drama spills in this new world she has never experienced before.

This magical world is not just faeries, it has different magical creatures, different courts (or lands), and powers that can sometimes allow faeries to control minds, daemati or “teleport”, winnow, just to name a few. Maas goes extensively into the different magical aspects of this world and builds it up so you know all of the little details she is comprising for Feyre and the other characters of the books. Some characters are better than others, and audiences begin to love unexpected characters, but this book sets up for the rest of the ongoing series. ACOTAR keeps you on your feet wanting to read more and more with the cliffhangers at the end of each of the chapters. And in true Sarah J. Maas fashion, of the endings of all her books, the last 100 or so pages are the most exciting and dramatic - so much that it is hard to put the book down at this point. Definitely recommend this story if you are interested in getting into the Romantasy genre! Five stars, ☆☆☆☆☆ !!
