A Love Letter to Yourself: Prioritizing Self-Care

Imagine it’s a cold and rainy day, and you’ve just received your chemistry exam grade. You’re regretting your career choice, feeling stuck, and to make matters worse — it’s Valentine’s Day, and you have no partner to lean on for comfort, and no one to hold you or offer support. It sounds disheartening, but I’m here to remind you that even in these moments, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Taking care of yourself is essential, not only to manage stress but to maintain balance in your life. Without self-care, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the constant demands of daily life. Some people avoid it because they love working, while others struggle to find the time.

Self-care isn’t easy, whether it's carving out time in a busy schedule or figuring out what actually helps you recharge. As a self-proclaimed workaholic, I personally struggle with making time for myself. I’ve always admired hard workers, especially my parents, and I don’t want to let that go. Right now, I’m juggling three clubs, two community service organizations, a job, and 18 credits. When I take a step back and look at everything I do, I realize how much I push myself. While I used to believe taking breaks was a waste of time (and honestly, I still struggle with that mindset), I’ve come to understand that burnout is inevitable without them. Learning to pause and care for myself has been essential to staying productive and healthy.

Practical Self-Care Tips

When it comes to self-care, it’s important to do something positive in a setting that helps you unwind. This could be a brunch with friends, a cozy night in with your dog, or simply stepping outside for fresh air. The key is to step away from routine — to find a space that feels refreshing, like a deep breath after a long day.

Another crucial part of self-care is engaging your senses. While I’m not a psychologist, I do know that stimulating all five senses can help you feel more grounded. Think about activities where you naturally do this: watching a movie while eating popcorn, listening to music while wrapped in a soft blanket, or taking a walk while enjoying the scent of fresh air. These small moments of sensory engagement can be incredibly calming and help reset your mind.

Lastly, the most important step is simply to enjoy the moment. With busy schedules and endless to-do lists, self-care often takes a backseat. But if you allow yourself this time, you’ll feel lighter, refreshed, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges.

Self-care isn’t about avoiding responsibilities — it’s about making sure you’re in the best mental and physical state to take them on. So, whether you’re struggling with school, work, or just the weight of everyday life, remember that taking time for yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary. After all, even the hardest workers need a break.
